Jim, your IP address is assigned everytime you logon, is not static as you say. Rule of thumb is one IP per 10 users suffices.

I just got a cable modem. I believe the IP address isn't static but it's always on of course. I take it I'm more suseptible to virus attacks and should be getting a defense program?

You're not more open to virus attacks, but you are hooked directly into the Internet. Depending on how your system is set up (file sharing, ftp and telnet daemons, etc) you are open to hacking.
