NW-- Agreed -- we know CPQ is not just a boxmaker any longer but the PERCEPTION of WS is CPQ is a boxmaker and that will be difficult to change and will take time. WS is in a 'show me' mode and it must be well proven before the perception will change.
I also agree CPQs model is much better than that of DELL and it will change even more. I look for the retailers (# years) to be like a catalog shop of years ago,,, people will look at them there and TOUCH them before putting the order in, few will be on the shelves. Many of those ordered by phone or on the net will be picked up at the retailer and the retailer will take care of warranty and service work. If you look at the Feb issue of PC COMPUTING or listen to Ed Kirshner the message is "the distributor is dead unless they have something of value to add".
I really could care less where all the real and perceived boxmakers are. I have made money on HWP, MUEI, & DELL why CPQ languishes. Currently waiting on MUEI to drop a little, DELL to go up a little more -- and just watching HWP from the sidelines. I am not here for the "technology" or any reason but to make a buck... I keep up on the technology only to be info used when making purchases for myself or my company!

OT: Rahhhhhhhhhhh, rahhhhhhhhhhh. Duh duh duh duh duh duh...

Ah, I love the smell of two cycle mixture in the morning.

Time to get the chain saws out, NW. I needed smelling salts when I got a delivery of heating oil at $1.099 two weeks ago, from the company with the cheapest oil in this zone (COD only). This morning a friend, who uses the same company, got a delivery: $1.899/gallon!!! Some companies are selling heating oil for around $2.25.

In November I though the price was high at $.829 given it never got above $.62 last winter. Ha!

Lynn

Speaking of Wildfire:

>>Wildfire and iPaq are going to enable Compaq to eat Dell's lunch. <<

I do not totally understand Wildfire, so far it appears to fall in the "vaporware" or "wheat from the Ukraine" category. And apparently there is some tremendous gestation period required because Compaq decided to close the factory that was going to produce the hardware. It is confusing, the deal was made by Compaq before the Dec acquisition to go with Proliant servers which were presumably made in Texas or California. Wildfire software has been on the market for a number of years...whats the big deal?
