the nearest star was Cirrus

Sirrus is a little farther away than the Alpha Centauri system. This system is a triple with nearest Proxima Centauri (a small red dwarf) being about 4.3 lightyears away. Note, 1 lightyear is about 5.88 trillion miles - one of the few reasons to use trillion outside of the national debt.
