steve - maybe a week late... but still...
These aren't the mainframes on the ground though.
Correct - the lower performance of 2nd generation machines was accepted for in-flight because of the reduced power consumption, but the ground work was done mostly on IBM 655s. I think there was some transition to 709s and later 2nd generation 7090 machines in the mid-60's, prior to the launch of the 3rd generation machines. Arrival of the 360 would have been a little late for the first Apollo flights or even the moon landing.
