Si LED's: I will relay Cree's response when I obtain it...but I doubt Si as a substrate has much promise considering it's conductivity characteristics, heat tolerance and hardness... The AIN patent speaks (in addition to having strong IP programs) to the point that Hunter made that they are constantly looking at new technologies and are not at all wedded to any particular one as long as it has price/performance advantages and can be commercialized. Contrary to some opinions, they are not engineering driven but market driven and they stay focused on the biggest bang for the buck.
