Consolidating their best-of-breed position as full-service server/storage/service/software infrastructure vendor, so that as the appliance makers find their footing (which, as mentioned in the article I posted, is still unsure), Sun will profit and grow anyhow.

Sun also has partnerships with Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, etc. in many of the areas you mention though their own branded appliances have failed thus far. The SunRay may be DOA, I think it's too early to make the call. However, it doesn't much matter. It was a low-margin item whose purpose is nearly as well served, as far as Sun's top and bottom line is concerned, by other new emerging appliances as long as Sun executes its strategy.

As I keep saying, the battle is Sun's to lose.

Could it be that Wintel has seen the "demise" of the PC before Sun has?

I should assume you're joking, but no it most certainly could not be. Sun's model, which is based on the demise of the PC, has been ahead of its time for years and is being caught up with. Wintel, with its frantic paroxysm of partnerships most of which won't yield anything in the long run, is doing the catching up as their current model is left behind. Microsoft's "partnership" with T is more like a cross between an insurance policy and a donation.
