Cisco CEO sees rises for Internet stocks...FYI...

<<ZURICH, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Shares in Internet companies could rise more in view of the Internet's enormous growth potential, but investing in the sector is risky, Cisco Systems Inc Chief Executive John Chambers told a Swiss newspaper.

''Capital suppliers (shareholders) must be aware that the majority of these firms will not exist any more in two to five years,'' Chambers told the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper in an interview published on Monday.

''Young hi-tech companies want to grow quickly to win the race with time. On the other hand, they are being encouraged by the markets to list as quickly as possible,'' said Chambers, who has headed the San Jose-based network integration company since 1995.

''Many Internet companies will disappear just as quickly as they emerged. Consolidation in an emerging sector is a natural process linked to economies of scale,'' he said.

He said the Internet's growth potential was driven by a shift in capital investment with up to 70 percent now going into hi-tech, up from less than 10 percent in the 1970s and 1980s.

The money was being spent on the creation of networks, which Chambers called the backbones of the new knowledge society.>>
