Amy, <What are Compaq's known R&D initiatives? Compaq's reputation in the Server area seems good; better than the consumer market?>

I know of a couple of examples. The first one is Compaq's assistance in the development of Intel's 8-way Profusion chipset. Compaq was the one that created one of the bridge chips for the PCI buses. The second is Compaq's work into hot-plug technology for PCI. They're licensing their version of PCI hot-plug to others as we speak.

Also, I just get the feeling that when it comes to servers, Compaq really knows what they're doing. As you say, their servers have a better reputation than their consumer systems.

<From the standpoint of the customer, what is gained/lost by going with Dell vs. Compaq? With the Server market poised to grow (overall industry units), I am curious.>

Wish I knew. All I know is that Dell is seen as a threat to Compaq's server business.
