Compaq Launches CompaqNET In The UK Compaq Partners with Cable & Wireless to Deliver Free Internet Access to Business and Consumers Compaq in the UK today announces its own cost-effective and flexible access to the Internet. CompaqNET is a free ISP aimed specifically at small firms and consumers who can connect to the Internet for the price of a local call. An initial service offers customers five email addresses and 20Mb of personal web space. The new service represents a further element of Compaq's e-Business strategy, which aims to help individuals and businesses take full advantage of the Internet. CompaqNET is a worldwide initiative for Compaq, and the UK is one of the first European countries to launch the service. Through its partnership with Cable & Wireless, which is providing the virtual Internet Service Provider (ISP) platform for CompaqNET, Compaq, will make it easy for small businesses to get onto the Internet. They will be able to become e-businesses quickly, easily and at reduced risk. Consumers will be offered high quality Internet access and an increased choice of ISPs. William Knocker, e-commerce director at Compaq Computer Ltd, commented, "The launch of CompaqNET is one more step in our plans to unlock the power of the Internet across the business and consumer markets. In this case we are helping smaller businesses by providing a free and easy service for their e-commerce strategies, as well as offering them useful content and services. For consumers, CompaqNET provides an additional dimension to Presarios, our Internet-ready PCs." Initially downloadable from Compaq's website (www.compaqNET.co.uk) and shortly after available on CD, the CompaqNET service will be pre-loaded on the Prosignia and Presario range of computers. The Compaq Prosignia range is specifically designed to meet the requirements of small businesses, and Compaq Presario PCs provide consumers with the most hassle-free Internet experience via Compaq's unique Easy Access Internet Keyboard, which brings the Internet to the users' fingertips at the touch of a button. Compaq has provided hardware technology and systems integration services to support Cable & Wireless in building the virtual Internet Service Provider platform for CompaqNET in the UK, including project management, technical skills and support services from its Professional Services division. The co-operation on CompaqNET is in the context of the global relationship between Compaq and Cable & Wireless. In November 1999, the two companies announced that they will offer to small and medium-sized enterprises complete end-to-end e-business solutions, from Internet access devices to hosted business applications. These solutions will be offered from January 2000, initially in UK, Europe and US. Further expansion is planned across Asia Pacific during the following 12 months.
