*OT* US Officials Visit S Indian State Ahead Of Clinton Trip

Monday, February 7 9:48 PM SGT

HYDERABAD, India (AP)--President Bill Clinton's itinerary in India hasn't been announced, but an advanced team preparing his trip is leaving a trail of clues about his potential stops.

On Monday, the team was in Hyderabad, the state capital of Andhra Pradesh and a center of cyber-industries which has been bidding against the rival high-tech city of Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka, for a Clinton stopover. The two neighboring states are in south India.

The team, headed by Advance Program Director Rosen Than, already has visited New Delhi, Bombay and Goa to check out security arrangements and other facilities.

Clinton is due in India March 20-25 followed by a one-day visit to Bangladesh.

The team included Bernard J. Alter, the U.S. Consul General based in south Indian city of Madras, and U.S. Public Affairs Officer Mark Larsen.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, the techno-savvy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, wrote Clinton inviting him to his capital. Clinton gave a polite but noncommittal response.

Naidu and his rival S.M. Krishna, the chief minister of Karnataka, attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, competing with each other for foreign investment. Clinton also attended the summit.

Bangalore was the first to develop an international software industry, becoming known as India's Silicon City. But Hyderabad claims to be catching up with its high-tech neighbor.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) chose Hyderabad for its first software center outside the U.S.

Oracle (ORCL) and other top information technology companies also have opened offices in Hyderabad.
