What does this say about the current investment environment? Aren't they implying that investors were fools to put their money into the stocks of acquisitive companies with merger-fed inflated earnings?

Not only do we have this implication, but also this environment has very few who are willing to look behind reported numbers--even among the professionals. I find it troubling from a valuation standpoint. Technology stocks are subject to wild surprises all the time, but if the surprises that could be seen with some ferreting are not found, the overall volatility rises even further.
