Jochen, that post was very instructive and reminiscent for me, bringing back memories from the Seventies when ATT BELL International was contracted to "upgrade" the Saudis to electronic switching and terrestrial digital microwave transmission systems. In a very short time frame they went from being horrendously prehistoric to ultra modern, effectively relegating most of the the Western World's systems to historical terms, in comparative terms. At the time, electromechanical cross-bar switches and No. 1 ESSs were state of the art in most N.A. central offices. In contrast, and No. 5 ESSs were going in, "over there."

Leapfrogging also took place in the European Eastern Block countries about seven years ago where wireless systems went in in record time, as is the case in China where wireless and paging has taken on significant proportions very rapidly. The arithmetic of leapfrogging is not very difficult to deduce.

Your points are all well taken. Thanks for that inspiring post.
