MeDroogies,

Promotional give aways at a grand opening of a real neighborhood store work. That old technology still works in the real world. The cyberworld needs to develop some new promotional ideas for the cyberworld. In the real world, the neighborhood store gets repeat business because of travel limitations. There are no travel limitations in the cyber world. This competitive advantage over the real world also has disadvantages with cyber competitors.

I return to cyberstores I have used and received a good discount compared to real stores. I also use cyberstores to buy items not easily located in local stores at a good price. I view cyberstores as discount catalog stores and buy based on the price. If they weren't cheaper, I would go to the hassle of using them.

You work in the business. Does the cyberworld have a clue to the answer?

I personally do not think free ISPs, especially for CPQ [we have enough troubles to put behind us], are the way to go.

Before Christmas I remember people talking about the free ISPs they were using on another thread. The URLs for these places were shared and number of people expressed excitement over the idea, planned using one of these and dropping therir present, pay, service. I groaned.

As people sharing information explained, watching advertising in some way or other was what one "paid" for the free access. The other thing one "paid," my term, not theirs, was for these places to monitor where one went on the web to get an idea of what kind of commercials to target the person with.

This last did not seem to bother or get comments from anyone. I gagged. My tongue almost hung out. Maybe a person who surfs the web for recipes or articles on vitamins has nothing to worry about, but I'd rather pay for my connection any day rather than have free access--with the company, which knows who I am, knowing I hang-out at SI and do online trading. Especially the online trading--no way.

I got my Netzero "free ISP" CD from a movie theater.
I still think it would good marketing to offer it free with
Compaq PCs...as long as support is by Netzero.
