Productivity rate jumps, unit labor costs drop, Parry of the FED says great!

The nation's productivity rate jumped 5 percent in the fourth quarter, the government reported Tuesday, the fastest rate in 7 years and surpassing economists' forecasts for an increase of four percent. The
jump topped the 4.9 percent rise in the third quarter. Unit labor costs, a leading indicator of inflation pressures, fell 1 percent.

Excerpt:

Unit labor costs fell at a 1 rate in the fourth quarter after
declining a revised 0.3 percent pace in the third. The last back-
to-back drops in unit labor costs were in 1995-1996.
''A productivity surge in the last four years or so'' makes
it now appear the economy can grow faster than previously thought
without causing inflation to accelerate, Robert Parry, president
of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, said in a recent
speech.
