You are correct, the very idea of standards has come under attack, although there are countering movements. In the end, though, without attention to dignity and decorum, it is hard to maintain any standards whatsoever. It is not only a question of competence, but of pride in work, and respect for oneself and others, which motivates the discipline needed. That is one reason that it is dreadful to have Bozo the Prez setting the pace in public life...LOL!
