Actually, there are two reasons why I don't want a cable modem. Both having to do with the fact that the cable modem works like an ethernet. The first is sharing the line with you porn surfing neighbors, who are hogging up all of the bandwidth. The second is that all of the traffic that leaves your house also travels to all of your neighbors houses.

Normally, your cable modem/ethernet card is set up to filter out signals that aren't meant for you, but if you know a little about ethernet, TCP/IP, and the internet it is quite possible to tune a cable modem/ethernet card so that it listens all of the traffic.

Note, AT&T and other cable modem providers are really good about watching for abuse in this area.

Also, the same problems exists for DSL or regular dial-up lines, but the ethernet portion of the connection is locked up safely in the ISP's machine room.
