One of my friends owned a Russian company, and was told to sell it....or else. Corruption is endemic and the country is not that far from anarchy -- under Yeltsin.

On the other hand, as we all know, there are incredible natural resources, incredible technical talent, and plenty of Western money in the wings. I think a few butts in jail, along with commitments to investment will be encouraging to investors. I was encouraged when BP was allowed to re-own the company that was snatched away from them in "bankrupcy" procedures, but more time will tell.

My only message is to look for the signs of stamping corruption down. Putin has the credentials.
