Open pits have zones that vary in grade, but not a much as an underground mine. Also, sometimes the trucks are used to move overburden and waste, as opposed to ore. Now I'm sure you could mine the "best" areas, and try to haul only ore BUT eventually you are going to have to clean up the areas you have previously avoided. When you dig a hole you eventually have to take all the dirt out, can't leave some of it floating in mid-air !!

You might not believe this, but at one time the EPA classified the Bingham Canyon copper-gold mine as an environmental hazard. It had high concentrations of metals and the pit was not properly lined. If it did not have high concentrations of metals, it would not be a mine. And how do you line a pit that you are digging ? Do you dig a new hole under the old hole to put in a liner ?

Rose is a placer thru and thru. That pgms exist so much smaller than we can see and in copious quantities incites her and hence the defense!
