Lotsa Mula,
RE:"If you take copper interconnect advantage over aluminum one should get around 25 to 30% speedup. They played their last trump card to catch up with intel.

Now it is Intel's turn to play.

Guess who wins?"

I'd say both win for now.
As far as copper...well Dresden is just starting to ramp.
OTOH, I don't expect 30% from copper over aluminum, either.
I'd say 1.4 Ghz Athlons by the end of the year is possible but I'm not overly optimistic.

Jim

Mula - RE: "Intel demonstrates a PIII on aluminum interconnect at 1 GHZ, where as AMD needs copper to demo a 1.1 Ghz chip? That speaks volumes about Athlon design."

What makes you so sure what AMD and Intel showed off today is the max they can do, or the max they have in their respective labs? I doubt AMD or Intel would show off the highest GHz their processor could attain for the sole reason to keep the other company guessing.

bhagavathi,

Re:"copper gives 25% over Al"

Really.

WOW.

So are you reccomending shorting Intel.

AMD WAS faster with 0.25 Al vs Intel 0.25 micron.
AMD IS faster with 0.18 Al vs Intel 0.18 micron (and 850's coming next week in VOLUME).

And next quarter AMD will be running with Cu - and per your expert knowledge they'll gain another 25% advantage.

And Intel won't have copper till mid next year.

Are you really suggesting AMD will have a 25%-35% advantage over Intel.

Geez, can wait for baby BAMBAM to get a hold of you.

regards,

Kash

If you take copper interconnect advantage over aluminum one should get around 20 to 25% speedup. They played their last trump card to catch up with intel.>

mula, I don't know about this.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 1GHz Athlons on the Al process. Of course I don't know for sure, but I would not be surprised. Just my .02.
