<<Jill Barad really had no way of knowing what was in store for her with this company. Broderbund was playing channel stuffing games, and Mindscape was simply a complete fraud (a holdover from the days when it was known as Software Toolworks). The losses bubbled to the surface a few quarters later and wham!>>
Yeah, I remember reading about TLC in Herb Greenberg's column a number of times. I'm surprised MAT's management didn't see any of the problems. I'm guessing that they wanted to quickly add a software component to their general offerings. Seem to vaguely remember a similar foray that went bad for a major toy company in the days when Atari was king.

I agree that Mattel has an excellent brand and will bounce back in the future. I traded them last fall for a decent gain after their implosion. However I think if I had to choose between the two Hasbro's management has been making much smarter purchases, has less debt, greater book value, and better earnings, so I see a greater near term gain in their stock price.
