It seems to me that the purpose of the timing of today's announcement was an attempt to deflate any hype Intel's 1GHz may have created and of course to show AMD can do 1.1GHz.

I hope the actual release of faster chips doesn't depend on Intel's schedule. Next week's release of the 850 is timed to conflict with Intel's IDF. Maybe the timing of AMD and Intel's releases just happen to be the same, but I would prefer if AMD went their own way in the future, like with the 800's launch in January as opposed to Intel's December "launch" (even though Dell STILL can't...).
