no, i meant VMS as made by Compaq (ha ha..just kidding) ok Digital - one of the greatest engineering organization in the world (ok maybe the DEC Rainbow was a mistake and WPS plus wasnt that hot either come to think of it). Unix is only beginning to penetrate the high end core financial services markets slowly but they dont yet have the availability or clustering you can get in a VMS Cluster. Sun's traditional value proposition has always been performance and price and that hasnt always flown well with more ahem...demanding customers .

Tony -
No, he meant VMS as in VAXCluster. Those systems dominated the transaction handling at many financial houses - along with Tandem Himalaya for critical EFT - and at their peak they had about 70% of the installs. That is degrading over time but those systems are still very cost effective, capable, and for the most part the people depending on them say "if it ain't broke..."

Unix in any flavor still has a ways to go before it can achieve the stability and robustness of those systems. That is also an area where the access to a wide variety of applications and products makes almost no difference - those are dedicated custom systems and will be for a while.
