SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Electroglas Inc. here announced today that it has licensed measurement technology from Cascade Microtech Inc. that it said will lead to faster and more accurate testing ofadvanced semiconductor devices during production.

Cascade, of Beaverton, Ore., is the largest manufacturer of probe stations and wafer probe cards for parametric testing of semiconductors in laboratories. The technology transfer agreement Electroglas will put Cascade's capabilities into a production environment.

"Cascade is the world leader in parametric probing innovations for the research-and-development environment, where measurements must be at least an order of magnitude more precise than those of production tests," said Curt Wozniak, chairman and CEO of Electroglas.

Last year, Electroglas purchased a minority interest in Cascade for $3 million (see July 22, 1999 story ).

"Our license agreement with Cascade will enable Electroglas to reduce noise and substantially cut measurement settling times in probers for wafer production, thereby permitting more accurate, faster measurements in-line," he continued. "Such improvements anticipate by five years or more the measurement accuracy and throughput that new fabrication processes will necessitate."

Electroglas particularly sees the need for such accuracy in manufacturing high-speed telecommunications and computing devices.

"Cascade's parametric probing technology for the engineering environment complements Electroglas' roadmap for production wafer process monitoring," said Bruce McFadden, president and chief operating officer of Cascade Microtech. "Our patented technology makes Cascade the ideal strategic partner for Electroglas as they develop new process management tools."
