Motorola, Nortel Networks to Team on High-Performance Internet Equipment NortelNetworks Open IP Environment Routing Software to Support Motorola Processors,Computers Tue Feb 08 08:31:00 EST 2000
AUSTIN and DALLAS, Feb 8, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) announced today that they are collaborating to jointly enable manufacturers to develop advanced Internet products using a comprehensive, modular software platform incorporating Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment routing software.
The objective is to provide an open programmable environment for manufacturers to build next-generation equipment based on Motorola semiconductor families such as the PowerQUICC communications processors, and on Motorola PowerPC CPUs such as the MPC750. Developers will be able to take advantage of Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment and Motorola's leading-edge communication processors to build high-performance Internet solutions that are faster, more secure, more reliable, higher quality and more profitable.
Motorola also plans to incorporate Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment in high-end integrated computer systems from its CompactPCI product family. Nortel Networks and Motorola intend to jointly promote Motorola PowerPC as one of the key strategic processor architectures for the Open IP Environment.
"Together with Motorola, Nortel Networks is providing customers with Internet functionality required for developing new networking solutions based on IP," said Al Delorenzi, chief technology officer, Enterprise Solutions, Nortel Networks. "Our rapid growth in routers, combined with the growing number of companies licensing our Open IP Environment, not only proves market acceptance, but further demonstrates Nortel Networks' focus on building a high-performance Internet."
Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment, announced in November 1999, is designed to open standards and application programming interfaces for IP functions such as routing, authentication, security, encapsulation and tunneling, as well as IP applications like policy, networking management and accounting. Based on a modular software architecture, Open IP can Internet-enable everything from servers and networking processors to set top boxes, mobility devices and personal computers. The Nortel Networks Open IP Environment makes routing and IP software available to developers, enabling them to quickly deliver new Internet applications and services at much lower cost. Open IP is a big step toward building a more reliable, more secure, faster Internet and is driving a shift from expensive, complex "Old World" routers.
Motorola, the leader in communications processors, enables system solutions based on its integrated PowerPC families such as the PowerQUICC microprocessors. These processors are designed for a broad range of communication applications, ranging from Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) routers to high-end WAN and LAN switch/routers.
"The processing strength and immense application code base of the PowerPC and of the PowerQUICC family are attractive benefits to networking equipment developers," said Daniel Artusi, corporate vice-president, Motorola. "Combining Nortel Networks' Open IP Environment and Motorola's Digital DNA microprocessor solutions will give developers extensive tools to develop programmable system solutions. Through robust tools and support, our solutions shorten development time and ultimately lower overall design costs. Today's announcement builds on the on-going relationship between the companies and our efforts using the PowerQUICC family of microprocessors in Nortel Networks equipment."
Bill Donlan, vice president, global strategic accounts, Motorola Computer Group, added, "Motorola, through the Motorola Computer Group, has the expertise and capability to provide developers with high-availability CompactPCI computer systems. By being able to design Internet-ready devices quicker and at lower cost, Nortel Networks and Motorola are taking a big step toward building an Internet that is more available and reliable than today."
