gemsearcher,

Here is an example:

Nickel challenges palladium in capacitors - INCO
LONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Japanese manufacturers are looking at forms of nickel to replace palladium in multi-layer capacitors used in cellular telephones and other electronic equipment, a senior Inco Ltd (Toronto:N.TO - news) executive said on Friday.

John Jones, general manager of special products at Canadian-based Inco, said highly-conducting thin layer materials used in such items had traditionally been a palladium market.

``But due to the price and availability the Japanese have been looking increasingly at forms of nickel to put down in a thin layer and we are working on development projects with this for very fine nickel powders,' Jones told Reuters.

``These are starting to be used in increasing quantities in Japan,' added Jones, whose group at Inco produces such powders notably at its Clydach refinery in Wales.

He added that in this high-value but low volume application nickel could be a serious challenger to palladium.

There were no spot palladium sales from major producer Russia to Japan in 1999, although metal was supplied under long term contracts and this week some Japanese importers struck spot deals.

Uncertainty over supply from Russia since 1997 has been a factor in causing a sharp rise in the price of palladium.
