Dell launches division aimed at Internet market

February 8, 2000 10:02 AM
ROUND ROCK, Texas, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. DELL has formed a division to sell equipment to companies involved in Internet services and businesses, the company said on Tuesday.

Dell said its new Internet Partner Division will target Internet-service providers, companies that host Internet sites and those that provide access to software over the Internet.

It will provide customers with computer services, storage capabilities and services to build or expand their own Internet infrastructure and capabilities, the company said.

The size of the Internet infrastrucutre market for server and storage hardware could be as large as $180 billion during the next 6 years, Dell estimated.

"Dell has built a wealth of Web and e-business expertise, integrating its own operations using the Internet," Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

In May 1999 Fast Search & Transfer, an Oslo, Norway-based company, said it had teamed up with Dell Computer to build a search engine using Dell servers and storage subsystems that eventually would search the entire Web.
