What a bittersweet few months it has been for sports fans in Missouri. First, Payne Stewart, a native of Springfield, thrills us with his win at the US Open and his exploits at the Ryder Cup. Then he is killed in an eery plane crash.

Then, the Rams have their great season and win the Super Bowl while the Blues are serious contenders for the Stanley Cup.

Finally today Derrick Thomas passes away from his injuries suffered in a car accident a few weeks ago. DT was a great football player and a better person. He was the best and most popular player on the Chiefs. Anyone familiar with Kansas City sports knows the special bond between the Chiefs' players and fans and we have lost someone who not only thrilled us with his exploits on the field but also exemplified the ideal in community involvement to which all professional athletes should strive. He will be missed.
