The GE diamonds are industrial grade and they have been
making it for a long time. If I remember correctly, a
Frontline program on DeBeers' monopoly powers suggested
that they intimidated GE enough to not produce gem quality
diamonds. The Nova program dealt with some labs in Russia
that are producing virtually indistinguishable gem quality
diamonds. Infact, the only way that DeBeers could tell a
lab produced diamond was to look at the micro structure to
find the crystalline growth shape produced due to the way
seeding is done to grow the diamond crystal. That type of
analysis is not possible at the stores, so DeBeers is
considering putting their logo in the diamonds so buyers
can be assured that it is natural. A company in Florida
has bought the technology from one of the Russian labs
and will be selling the diamonds commercially soon.
A crystal of carbon, however differently it is formed,
is still a crystal of carbon, why all the fuss ;-))

That's fascinating. Do you think there is a trade in having the GE insignia removed(say in
holland)?

Not really. The polish on the girdle is no longer perfect.

Can an appraiser tell the difference between the mined variety and the GE variety?

A good one can.
