The Sagem announcement . . .

Rick, here's the paragraph I'm trying to decipher:

"Smart Card 2000, London -- Sagem has combined its world renowned skills in biometric technology and GSM
terminals to develop the Sagem MC 959 ID, the world's first high-tech dual-band GSM mobile to include a fingerprint reader on the back for total user security. In addition to preventing fraudulent use of lost or stolen phones, integrating fingerprint recognition - using the latest algorithms developed by Sagem's military security division - replaces the need for the PIN code used to customise the GSM mobile."

===============

As I understand the cell phones we usually think of, they don't require a PIN for customization purposes -- they are able to identify themselves to the network without one. Further, this PR comes from a smart card conference. I'm not sure, but it looks to me like Sagem has announced a fingerprint version of a smart card phone, i.e, a phone that accepts and bills to a smart card. We can keep an eye out on the press on this subject, because it will get further described.

More importantly, though, is that Sagem is not a telecom company. In other words, there is no OEM deal here, just a product Sagem would like to sell to an OEM. Motorola, on the other hand, seems to be shaping up as the Intel of the new wireless world, and with any luck will probably be an IDX OEM sometime this year.
