Hi Frank. A few weeks ago Regis McConnell posted the following link on the MRVC thread: ee.ic.ac.uk
In reading it I noticed that vertical cavity surface emitting lasers were an integral part of several of the optical devices discussed. I have been trying to find answers to a couple of questions related to this technology and thought that you or one of your equally smart disciples on this thread might know the answers.

1. These are fabricated from a Gallium Arsenide base which raised the question in my mind as to whether companies which are currently making telecommunications chips from GaAs like VTSS, PMCS & RFMD could easily switch to making vertical cavity surface emitting lasers or is the technology entirely different? I found three companies on the web which specifically make these components and they were not to my knowledge making telecom chips.

2. If optical computing and holographic storage become a practical reality in the future, would the makers of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers be a real growth industry or are there other systems which would obsolete them?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with these questions.

Best regards,
Bob
