<<I would prefer the current situation to such an eventuality.>> Most of the western world would. There is a growing recognition in the Muslim world that Israel has the right to exist. What overshadows that is the feeling that the Israelis committed a holocost of sorts on the Palistinians. The attitude of the Israelis seems to be "hey you lost a war, get over it." The two perspectives need to be reconciled before any real progress can be made; and like I said before I don't expect it sooner than say...judgement day.

As far as the Middle Eastern Nato you refer to...I don't think so. The Sunis and The Shi'ites are not going to do much more than coexist. Any effort to consolidate and stabilize the region needs to be done with Suni cooperation. The Shi'ites are happy staying out of it. In fact Iran is a sponge for Shi'ite refugies from Iraq. Defining Israel at the hub of a Middle Eastern Nato under US auspices might work because of economic dependencies but it would further polarize the region. This was my point from the start. When I asked you to tell me why "it aint gonna happen." You just did. Instability is in our best interests. I think we are well on our way to what you are proposing. I also don't think it is in the best interests of the Middle Eastern Region and will eventually back fire.

As long as the US manipulates the region for economic posturing instead of what is in the best interests of the people who live there it is a short term gain at best and people like Saddam Hussein and Bin Laudin have protectorate.
