I have a question perhaps you or somebody can answer. I understand that only about 30% of the light photons generated in the quantum well make their way out of even the brightest LED. Ways to increase this light output would include thinner semiconductor layers, a more spherical shape, and transparent substrates. My question is about the latter. Sapphire can be transparent (the blue color is due to impurities), and I assume that the SiC is also transparent (looks like diamond). Since there are limited numbers of transparent materials that have the right physical properties and lattice match, this would imply that there is only minimal risk that some clever engineer could come up with a better substrate than SiC. Correct?
