The eyemodule(TM) Digital Camera for the Handspring(TM) Visor(TM) Handheld Computer to Be Unveiled Today at Demo 2000 February 8, 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDIAN WELLS, Calif., Feb. 7, Demo 2000 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation - The eyemodule(TM) digital camera, which turns the Handspring(TM) Visor(TM) handheld computer into a convenient image capture device, will be introduced here today. Jeff Hawkins, co-founder, chairman and chief product officer of Handspring, Inc., will unveil and demonstrate the product at the conference. The eyemodule was designed by Palo Alto-based IDEO Product Development Inc., one of the world's most innovative design and product development consultancies. The product will be manufactured by Blocks Products, the manufacturing arm of IDEO. The eyemodule digital camera snaps elegantly into the Visor via its Springboard(TM) expansion slot to enable easy capture and viewing of digital images in color or black & white. Images can be categorized, annotated, beamed to other Visor handhelds or Palm OS devices, or synchronized to a personal computer with the included software to edit, e-mail, or print. The eyemodule will be released in Spring 2000 and will be sold through Handspring's web store (www.handspring.com) for $149.00. "Capturing and managing digital images will be a major application for the handheld market, and IDEO's approach shows a good understanding of what people are looking for in such a solution," said Jeff Hawkins. "The eyemodule digital camera is a smart product that creates a lot of fun and useful applications for Visor users, and we expect it to be very successful." When the eyemodule digital camera is snapped into the Springboard expansion slot, the product adds 15 mm to the total length with no increase in thickness. Image quality is comparable to many basic digital cameras available today. The eyemodule utilizes a CMOS imaging array to create digital images with very low power requirements. Images are viewed on the screen of the Visor in real time, so users don't need to raise the Visor to the eye to look through a viewfinder. Images are automatically labeled with a date and time. Images also can be renamed and have notes attached to them. A Visor Deluxe with 5MB of free memory can store more than 500 small black & white images, or more than 125 large black & white images, or more than 25 color images. Images can be viewed, printed, and e-mailed as JPEG files using software included with the eyemodule. Dennis Boyle leads the IDEO studio that designed the eyemodule digital camera, which went from the concept stage to full production in less than 9 months. Said Boyle, "The eyemodule was a win-win opportunity for both IDEO and Handspring. Over the years, IDEO has developed a number of its own products in cases where we can add value to our client's product and business strategy. IDEO's involvement with the design of the Handspring Visor, along with our experience designing thousands of products over many years, allowed us to bring the eyemodule to market very quickly."
