Nike: Year Earnings Could Miss Estimates
BEAVERTON, Ore. (Reuters) - Athletic footwear and apparel giant Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE - news) on Tuesday forecast at least a 20 percent rise in full-year earnings per share but said profits could still fall slightly below Wall Street estimates.

For the fiscal year ending May 31, Nike's earnings could fall below the consensus estimate of $2.08 a share as compiled by First Call/Thomson Financial, Nike President Thomas Clarke said in remarks prepared for a meeting with analysts in New York.

Excluding a restructuring charge, Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike earned $1.66 a share in fiscal 1999 on net income of $478.7 million.

Clarke said the company was seeing a ``rapid reduction of square footage in the athletic retail industry.' While good for the long-term health of the industry, this could cause full-year earnings per share to come in modestly below the consensus estimate, he said.

``While we are confident that the ongoing reduction in U.S. athletic retail square footage will result in a more profitable environment for our retail partners, the short-term impact may result in a slower rate of sales growth for our U.S. footwear business in fiscal 2001,' Clarke said
