Les, from what I understand they only calculate output unit (regardles if it is useful or for free) and devide it by salary paid. Period.

All the other ways of compensation like company car, health care, paid seminars in the Carribean Islands stock option and other goodies are not calculated.

Les, answer to your question - re productivity

For the year, productivity grew 2.9 percent, the largest
increase since 1992. That's the fourth year in a row productivity
gains exceeded 2 percent, which hasn't happened since 1961-1966.
In manufacturing alone, productivity increased 6.4 percent last
year, the best since a 6.9 percent gain in 1971. Labor costs rose
1.8 percent in 1999, down from a 2.4 percent gain in 1998.

The productivity gains, combined with the declining labor
costs, helped U.S. companies post their largest profit gains in
four years.

Barrick Gold Corp., for instance, bought 330-ton
capacity trucks to replace 190-ton trucks at its main Goldstrike
mine in Elko, Nevada. The move helped the company boost gold
production 21 percent last year with fewer workers.

Now no were is it mentioned how much those trucks cost. For sure there are not the same price as the 190 ton. In addition how you know what the interest expenses and maintenance cost for a 330 truck are versus the salary of an additional driver.

BLS just calculates that ABX uses less drivers for more output.
