Sorry so late - family duty caught up in a big way. Pleasurable, life-affirming duty, but fatiguing.

Spouse comes home today.

About the silver method - polishes that you apply and buff remove the tarnish and the silver compounds with it. The electrochemical process actually reduces the tarnish to metallic silver, which stays on the piece. At worst, the silver will have a hazy appearance. But you can go in with a fine silver polish (that you rub on and off) and conserve more silver over all than with just polishing off the tarnish mechanically. It's pretty cool.
