marc u: I did the same thing - hedged with ProFund UltraBear Fund (-2 Beta) on the theory that 5% upside in the major averages would cause a -10% loss on the investment in the hedge. The mania in the NAZ100 has left the broad averages to languish - thus my hedge has hung in there. When the NAZ comes tumbling down, I'd think it will take all the averages down with it and thus the UltraBear Fund will generate a profit to cover some of the losses in the taxable mutual funds I held onto. Of course I forfeit money market returns on the amount I invest in the hedge. But I think it will be a great strategy and I thank you for the idea.
