Yes, gerbils are those teeny useless things. And I remember another awful thing--once when I picking one up, its tail came off in my hand. It didn't seem to notice, but I was traumatized. My sweet kitties are fine. Spike, the abyssinian, is an incredible pet. So naughty and so smart. He sits on my shoulders as I cook, and drives me crazy, but its hard to get angry with him when he looks at me with those big amber eyes. Unlike my teenager, he's never embarrassed by me. Unconditional love. I say embarrassed because I bought a book today: "Zits" (a collection based on the newspaper cartoon about a teenager). John went into major spasms when he saw it. I didn't think he knew about it, but he most definitely does. I'm in the mommy doghouse. I hope you and yours are doing well.
