I prefer C++ myself and have never used Delphi, but having used BC++B and knowing that Delphi uses the same model, I strongly disagree with your comments about Delphi.

I think the idea that you have Delphi & BCB with the same component library is a major plus. Literally, one can choose the language. While I prefer c++, when I have a need to work in Delphi I'm totally comfortable with it. I must say, though, I agree with you about Java. It will never live up to the hype.

Java is not now, and never will be, a general purpose language. While one can criticize CORL for not finishing its big Java product, the criticism really should be about their having begun the project in the first place. To have selected a language that was literally in the early stages of its evolution was a foolish, amateurish mistake.

It is absurd, when you consider the wasted resources, that most development is NOT done with Borland tools.

"Regarding Java, and this is a personal opinion, it is a joke"

Kiriakos, that statement only advertises your ignorance and it's not a light ignorance but a powerful ignorance. Please open your eyes and get some factual data before advertising your ignorance. For crying out loud, you might as well have called Linux a joke. Don't bother responding since you have nothing to offer.

Kiriakos,

I was tempted to congratulate you for an insightful post a day or so back, but didn't because I could add nothing to the Corel-Inprise discussion. Now, I see you have been attacked by McPherson, who apparently delights in character assassination, so I want you to know that at least one of us does not share his feeling. Thank you for your comments.

Since I am writing, I will add these snippets:

1) I am long on both sides of this transaction, although I sold off 2/3rds of my holdings in both companies after peeking in on the Linux Show in New York last week.

2) I am ambivalent about the merger, and won't come down squarely on either side until I have more information.

3) I think the fact that both firms have a strong international presence is an important feature of the combined companies.

4) I think that the outcome of the MS antitrust case will have a positive effect on BorEl.

5) I am very concerned about Senor Cowpland getting access to the cash in Inprise's account.

6) I think Inprise's cash should be distributed to INPR's shareholders, before the merger.

Fred
