Toshiba pushed out of No. 1 spot in European PC market

BRUSSELS, Feb. 9 (Kyodo) -- Japan's Toshiba Corp. has lost its
five-year domination of Europe's personal computer (PC) market to U.S.
computer giant Compaq Computer Corp., The Wall Street Journal Europe
reported Wednesday.

Toshiba's shares in the European market fell to 16.3% in the fourth
quarter of 1999, outstripped by Houston-based Compaq, which boosted its
share to 17.2%, the paper said, quoting figures from U.S. research firm
Dataquest.

Toshiba, whose market share peaked in the first quarter of 1998 at 30%,
was the only leading portable PC vender out of the top 10 to see
fourth-quarter unit sales decline from the previous year, it said.

Despite lackluster growth in the corporate sector, better than expected
Christmas sales to individual consumers boosted total sales of portable
PCs in Europe by 23%, it said. More than 1.4 million units were sold in
Europe in the fourth quarter.

The paper said the Japanese company was caught off-balance by component
shortages and booming demand from consumers.

It quoted a Dataquest official as saying Toshiba has lost the technical
edge it used to enjoy over its competitors.

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) came in third in the
European PC market, followed by Dell Computer Corp. and Acer Group of
Taiwan.
