>>this could result in a buying frenzy (eventually) of Fibre Channel companies and integrating them into the optical SAN giants that would come out of say a merger between EMC & Oracle with a buy out of Lucent, Nortel or Cisco buying up MTI, or Sunw. Just some thinking out loud here about what the future might bring.<<

Whoa Joe, with thinking like that, who needs a crystal ball? <g>

Consolidation zones litter the board in the Fibre Channel - SAN game, fer cher. I'm not so sure FC can supplant entrenched ethernet in the LAN and WAN markets though. I think it will perpetually remain a subnet transport, providing connectivity services to any Upper Level Protocols. It's life as a transport for clustering servers will be shortened with the arrival of IB. Until SCSI is mapped to ethernet, we won't see XX Giga Bit Ethernet supplanting FC in the SAN anytime soon.

What will the future bring? Que sera, sera. Well, that's what my mother told me.
