John, RE: Interesting thought, how about Microsoft Linux? Disregarding the fact that the FTC would go bananas, it might make sense for both Microsoft and the marketplace.

Given that we've already got Red Hat, I don't see where the addition of a MSFT Linux would help the marketplace.

In addition, for the business market VA Linux also provides a well-supported Linux (heck, it may be Red Hat Linux for all I know).

Trusting Corel to provide your Linux operating system seems to me to be a the same thing as buying TRS-DOS for your DOS.

Good Morning John and thread,

RE: "Linux isn't ready for prime time"

Actually, the core of Linux is ready for prime time, and is very, very rock solid.

*Very* impressive uptime stats.

RE: "argue for a trusted "manufacturer" to distribute the product? I know of Red Hat"

Bingo.

RE: "how about Microsoft Linux? Disregarding the fact that the FTC would go bananas, it might make sense for both Microsoft and the marketplace."

Microsoft makes business decisions according to the marketplace. In fact, Microsoft was the world's largest applications development house for the Mac. (The Findings of Facts neglected to include this fact.) What would stop them from being the world's largest Linux development house? Good question. That's a relatively easy business question, whose answer could be easily calculated.

Back to Linux:

1) openness can be good or bad, depending upon the disty
2) does the disty say, "get with the open program, and get your fix elsewhere", or,
3) does the disty say, "we're going to take advantage of the open program, and take code from the outside world to fix this"

You hit it on the head.

Regards,
Amy J

Does the fact that Linux isn't ready for prime time argue for a trusted "manufacturer" to distribute the product? I know of Red Hat, don't know others that sell a Linux finished product.
