Amy, As Liux gains share the makers of mobos, cards, monitors etc will make their specs more available so that drivers can be written. Some will make their own linux drivers. Gamers will lead this area since it is expected that games will run faster on linux and they do anything to gain a few % share. Witness the surge of gamers buying Athlons. The Athlon is perceived by gamers as being faster than the same clock P-III and it costs less. I expect a P-III with rambus will not be beatable by the same clock Athlon, but the Rambus prices the system above most gamers(who are school kids and poor techies....for the most part).
Linux is expected to make all games go faster and the few games that have been compiled to linux have indeed been faster, from what i read. Not being a gamer I would look at some game sites for the feel of gamers in better detail.

As for MSFT, they get stymied because they cannot screw up linux like they did Lotus oir word perfect because they are not the OS. As Linux gathers steam it will gain share. Already the sub $200 systems are going linux(free versus $100+ for Win98 is a no brainer for a sub $200 system builder. Yet a sub $200 system is a good web capable system at 200-400 Mhz it will do most tasks with a 1 gig HD and 32M ram it will sell a bunch. This is where Via is going.
