"Performance Enhancement Initiative Launched:

Bank One has introduced a corporate-wide Performance Enhancement Planning Program, designed to improve the company's bottom line through expense management.

The bank will examine staffing throughout the organization, reduce management layers and cut expenses. The program will be directed by Barbara Murphy and be overseen by a steering committee made up of Verne Istock, Dave Bolger, Tim Moen and Bob Rosholt.

The program has two key initiatives: Implementing several "quick-hit" projects and establishing a longer-term benchmarking process that will compare the bank's performance metrics against those of competing financial institutions.

The quick hits include the following:

Examining management layers and spans-of-control within lines of business and staff units.

Developing an inventory of staff functions, clarifying roles and responsibilities and eliminating redundancies. Creating an inventory of staffing models, identifying over/under utilization conditions, and sharing information about availability of models across businesses. For example, businesses that have Call Centers might want to use staffing models that other businesses have successfully used.
Working with Strategic Sourcing and the business units on sourcing projects that may have enterprise wide impacts, such as event planning and the coordination and use of outside consultants."
