ISS Protects eCommerce Sites from Latest Denial of Service Hacker Attacks, Releases New Versions of SAFEsuite Product Line

~ ISS First to Provide Prevention and Detection Solutions for Maximum Protection During Year 2000 Rollover and Beyond ~

ATLANTA, Ga. - December 28, 1999 - Internet Security Systems (ISS)(NASDAQ: ISSX), a leading provider of security management solutions for e-business, today announced the availability of a new versions of its SAFEsuite intrusion detection solution, RealSecure, as well as ISS SAFEsuite security assessment and decision-support solutions, to enable critical protection from new, high risk Denial of Service attacks, Tribe Flood Network and trin00.

Thoroughly researched and announced by the ISS X-Force Security Research Team ( xforce.iss.net )and the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), Tribe Flood Network and tin00 have been classified as the most powerful Denial of Service attacks observed on the Internet to date. In addition, they are expected to be one of the major hacker attacks used during the Year 2000 rollover. A Denial of Service attack is designed to take control and bring down an enterprise network or e-commerce site by fooding it with large amounts of traffic. As new types of structured Denial of Service attacks, Tribe Flood Network and trin00 simultaneously penetrate thousands of machines, allowing an attacker to gain unauthorized remote control and with a single command, shut down network operations.

“Our focus on security research enables ISS to continue to help organizations protect themselves from the latest security risks,” said Mark Wood, manager of intrusion detection solutions for ISS. “We are pleased to leverage our world-leading expertise and sophisticated detection technology to provide customers with a quick and thorough
solution across our SAFEsuite product line for detecting and responding to these new, high risk threats.”

Due to its sophistication, protection from Tribe Flood Network and trin00 is best achieved through the use of both attack prevention and detection techniques utilizing security assessment, decision-support and intrusion detection technologies.

Detection

While ISS SAFEsuite intrusion detection solution, RealSecure, already detects all of the Denial of Service attacks that trin00 and Tribe Flood Network use, ISS has added an additional set of complex decodes to the newly released RealSecure (version 3.2.1). These decodes enable RealSecure to automatically identify and respond to the presence of trin00 and Tribe Flood Network daemons active on an organization's enterprise network.

Prevention

Recently released X-Press Updates to ISS SAFEsuite security assessment solutions, Internet Scanner and System Scanner, are critical to preventing an attack using trin00 and Tribe Flood Network and in finding systems that have been infected. Together, they can automatically scan an enterprise network to find the trin00 and Tribe Flood Network daemons running on a specific host machine before an enterprise-wide attack takes place. In addition, ISS security assessment solutions identify the vulnerabilities that hackers use to break in and set up the daemons enabling organizations to fix these vulnerabilities before their networks can be shut down. This is important because of the highly distributed and scaleable nature of the daemon component of these attack programs.

SAFEsuite Decisions, can also aid in tracing the actual attacker through the correlation and analysis of RealSecure event data.

Secure Communications

The new version of RealSecure also makes ISS the first company to provides strongly encrypting versions of this critical intrusion detection solution to customers outside of the United States. With its maximum secure communications channel protecting RealSecure data, this new version provides the industry's most secure intrusion detection solution for global e-commerce protection.

Availability

The updated version of ISS SAFEsuite intrusion detection, RealSecure 3.2.1, and X-Press Updates to ISS SAFEsuite security assessment, Internet Scanner and System Scanner, are available now.
