Geoff,

Why wouldn't it be more advantageous to sell the option and sell the stock at the same time? Remember, the option in question had about $1.50 in time value remaining and that's a lot of transaction cost.

As I recall, here are the approximate facts at the time of the exercise: the price of the security was $41 and the exercise price of the Jan option was $47 1/2 and the price of the put was $7.875 bid $8.125 asked.

Still confused.
