Microsoft to provide information sought by EU

BRUSSELS, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> said it
looked forward to providing information requested by the
European Union as part of a probe into whether the U.S. software
giant's new operating system breaks EU competition law.
"We received the request for information. They have asked us
to provide the information by the beginning of March and we look
forward to doing that," John Frank, Microsoft's European
director of law and corporate affairs, told Reuters from Paris.
"We have shared a wide variety of technical information
about Windows 2000 broadly with software developers, customers
and competitors," he said.

E*Trade, ZDNet sites hit by hackers
New York--Feb 9--Internet hackers struck again, adding on-line broker
E*Trade Group Inc.'s (EGRP) and technology provider ZDNet to the list
of companies whose Web sites have been disabled by a flood of data.
E*Trade said its site was affected for about one hour Wednesday
morning. ZDNet spokeswoman Martha Papalia said the ZDNet site was down
for about two and a half ho urs early Wednesday. The site had returned
to normal by midday,
she said. The attack on E*Trade and ZDNet follow similar attacks on
some of the Web's most popular sites in recent days, including
Amazon.com (AMZN), Yahoo! (YHOO) and Ebay (EBAY). (Story .5972)

European Union to open probe into Microsoft Windows 2000
Brussels--Feb 9--EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti said the EU
has extended its ongoing investigation into the US software giant
Microsoft Corp.
(MSFT)to include its latest Windows 2000 software. Monti told a press
conference that Microsoft has been given four weeks to respond to
allegations that some parts of Windows 2000 breach EU anti-trust rules
and could impede the growth of e-commerce. (Story .15083)
