These applications include Internet-enabled electronic receipt capture, e-mail, e-commerce, on-screen point-of-sale advertising and couponing, and other information-based support services - in addition to traditional card payment functions.
``The emergence of Internet-enabled card payment terminals at the point of sale is without question one of the most dramatic opportunities on the retail front in the last 20 years,' said George Wallner, president and CEO, Hypercom Corporation. ``For the first time, we can bring the benefits of the Internet to the vast majority of 'brick and mortar' merchants. That spells new revenues and profits for ISOs, processors and merchants, and value-added services for the consumer.'
Hypercom© has developed a framework, called ePOS-infocommerce(TM), or ePic, to bring to market Internet-enabled terminals and their supporting gateway servers. Based on the ICE(TM) family of interactive, touch screen terminals, a broad range of Internet-based information and services can now be made available, securely and cost-effectively, on the retail merchant's countertop.
``ePic strategically converges the physical and virtual worlds, and transforms POS terminals into information delivery and program access platforms that give transaction-based service providers an unprecedented opportunity to build revenues and streamline their operations, and provide consumers with an array of new services,' Wallner said.
With terminal-based e-mail, for example, merchants can improve their communication with banks, suppliers and consumers directly from the point-of-sale, without the need for a PC.
Merchants faced with charge-backs can quickly connect to an ePic receipt-storage system via the Internet, locate the receipt by date and card number, and send it directly to Visa or MasterCard by electronic mail, fax or electronic data interchange. They can also retrieve receipts either via a PC or an ePic ICE terminal.
Sophisticated interactive messages and revenue-generating incentives can be directed to shoppers when they are interacting with, and have their attention focused on, Hypercom's graphics screen ICE terminal at the point-of-sale.
Immediate on-screen access to loyalty and coupon programs can translate into high levels of consumer participation and generate additional revenues for the merchant delivering these programs.
E-commerce gives small merchants the power to tap into a huge market beyond their storefront and dramatically increase sales. The ePic framework supports e-commerce that allows small merchants to set up web stores quickly and at little cost, and pickup orders and complete fulfillment using their ePic ICE terminals; again, without the need for a costly and troublesome PC.
``Brick and mortar merchants operating web stores want to do fulfillment using merchandize in the stores and using store clerks already on the payroll,' Wallner said. ``Selling over the Internet is the most cost-effective way for merchants to dramatically extend their reach and increase sales. Indeed, it is a business imperative if merchants are to maintain and build sales.'
Hypercom's ePic will also provide financial institutions and merchants with a new core technology that will enable them to offer a wide range of electronic payment services that are customer-oriented, business integrated and available through Hypercom's ICE platform.
