SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Softnet Systems Inc.
<SOFN.O>, a provider of high-speed Internet access solutions to
businesses, said on Wednesday it and two high-technology firms
would jointly invest $100 million to create a service designed
to bring speedy wireline and wireless Internet access to
business travelers.
CMGI Corp. <CMGI.O>, Compaq Computer Corp. <CPQ.N> and
SoftNet will provide funding and technology to the venture, to
be called SoftNet Zone. Finnish cellphone maker Nokia Corp.
<NOK.N> and Cisco Systems Inc. <CSCO.O> will provide
technological and equipment support to the venture, Softnet
said.
SoftNet Zone will operate local networks and computing
business service centers in areas such as major airports,
convention centers and hotels with the aim of making Internet
access readily available to travelers' mobile computing
devices.
As part of the strategy, SoftNet also said it agreed to
acquire closely held Laptop Lane Inc. for 1 million shares of
SoftNet stock and about $3.5 million in debt. Laptop Lane is a
provider of mobile computing and communications services in
airports.
