Bombardier Receives a $660-Million Order From the Netherlands Railways FEBRUARY 10, 2000 MONTREAL, QUEBEC--Bombardier Transportation was awarded an order from the Netherlands Railways (NS Reizigers) for the delivery of 252 vehicles, consisting of 13 four-car and 12 six-car double-deck electrical multiple units (EMUs) and 128 double-deck intermediate coaches type VIRM, as well as the retrofitting of existing IRM vehicles. The contract is valued at approximately Cdn$660 million (465 million Euro). Delivery of the vehicles will start at the end of the year 2001 and be completed by mid 2004. This order from NS Reizigers is a continuation of the long-term successful co-operation between the Netherlands Railways and Bombardier Transportation. Over the last 30 years, the Aachen, Germany, site - which was acquired by Bombardier in 1995 - has delivered more than 2,000 passenger vehicles to the Netherlands. The site in Aachen will be responsible for the complete vehicle assembly, testing and after sales. The body-shells of the vehicles will be manufactured at the site in Gorlitz, also located in Germany. This site, which can look back on a long-standing tradition in the construction of railway vehicles, has become a well-recognised centre of excellence for the construction of aluminium and steel body-shells. The new double-deck EMUs and coaches will serve to extend and modernise NS Reiziger's existing fleet of IRM vehicles. The IRM vehicle concept (InterRegioMaterieel, or intercity rolling stock), customised for intercity traffic in the Netherlands, was developed jointly with the customer in the early 1990s and has since contributed to attracting an increasing number of passengers. The extension of the IRM fleet became necessary to cope with the increasing ridership on these trains. The interior and exterior design of the new vehicles is based on the successful concept of the existing trains. Bombardier Transportation, a world leader in the manufacturing of passenger rail cars, offers a full range of urban, suburban and intercity vehicles as well as complete rail transit systems world-wide. It also manufactures freight cars and provides operations and maintenance services. Bombardier Inc. is a Canadian corporation active in the fields of aerospace, rail transportation equipment, recreational products and financial services. It operates plants in 12 countries in North America, Europe and Asia, and more than 90 % of its revenues are generated outside Canada. Bombardier's revenues for its fiscal year ended January 31, 1999 totalled $11.5 billion.
